NextGEN Gallery

This is a gallery plugin with a slideshow, album and lightbox options. The features include templates, AJAX based thumbnail generator, sortable albums, watermark function, javascript effects, sidebar widget etc.

But what if you want the option of having certain pages in your website or blog with a left sidebar? You need a template designed to display your main content on the right, and a sidebar on the left.

Begin by creating these 2 files:

To create pages using the left-hand sidebar simply select the two column template from the drop-down menu.

This screenshot displays a message under the Theme Location tab, stating that this theme doesn’t natively support menus. If you need to know whether the free theme supports menus, install it, then visit this page. If the theme supports menus, you will see 2 drop down boxes available under the Theme location tab for Menu selection.

It’s common practice to have 2 menu bars on a blog, one for pages and one for categories. If you are using a free theme and need the native WP menu support, it’s very easy to add.

Register Menu

The first thing to do is to register one or two menus. You do so by adding this code to your functions.php file. Note: replace “top menu” and “bottom menu” text with your own.

The my_theme nav1() and my_theme_nav2 functions check if wp_nav_menu exists, meaning you are running WordPress 3.0 or later. The fallback function executes if it doesn’t exist, or if no menus have been created.

Display the Menu

Add the following code in your Header.php where you want each of your menu’s to display:

First Menu:

Now create your menus in the Admin panel, and select one from the drop down for the Top Menu, and one for the Bottom Menu. This screenshot shows a theme that supports 2 menus. All you need to add is the CSS styling for your menus.
